Three people were recently taken into custody in connection with a fatal shooting in New Jersey. The alleged shooting took place at a laundromat on a Monday afternoon. Still, these three individuals, like anyone else accused of gun crimes in the Garden State, are presumed innocent until and unless their guilt can be proven in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

Police said they arrived at the laundromat at about noon and discovered a 21-year-old man in the business’s back area. According to police, he had several gun shot wounds and ended up dying later. A boy, 16, had also suffered gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital.

Police reported that the incident happened when another man, 37, was attacked by a group of individuals at the laundromat. This reportedly prompted a woman, 74, to retrieve a handgun and shoot at these individuals. That is when the 16-year-old boy was allegedly shot. Police said the woman then handed the gun to the 37-year-old man, who used it to shoot the 21-year-old man. A boy, 15, then reportedly used the same gun to shoot the 21-year-old man once again before the three alleged shooters fled the building.

The three individuals now face several charges, including attempted murder, murder and weapons offenses. However, they have the right to vigorously fight these charges at trial. Prosecutors must prove charges of gun crimes and other serious offenses beyond a reasonable doubt before any convictions can be handed down.  There are obvious issues of self defense and third  party responsibility inherent in this case.  An attorney will look for holes in the prosecution’s case in an effort to achieve the best outcome possible for a defendant involved in this type of case in New Jersey.
